News - 8.16.10 - Pasadena Fight Academy Fights

AMMS fighters Isaac Velsaco, Terrion Ware, and Howard LaCroix  make their team and coaches proud on Saturday night, August 14th, after showing great talent and promise at their first amateur MMA fights. "Proving Grounds 3" took place at Pasadena Fight Academy, hosted by pro fighters Savant Young and Jamie Yager. This was a California State sanctioned MMA show. Read below for details of the fights.

Fight 1 - ISAAC VELASCO
Isaac showed an amazing display of well-rounded fighting. His opponent immediately went for takedowns in order to get Isaac to the ground, but several times Isaac defended the takedown or reversed the clinch against the cage. Once on the ground, there were several reversals back and forth, with Isaac and his opponent each gaining an equal amount of time in dominant positions. This turned out to be a very well-matched fight for Isaac, even though his opponent was more experienced on the ground and had prior MMA fights. Isaac won the 2nd round, but lost the 1st and 3rd rounds due to more takedowns by his opponent, who did not want to stand up and box the AMMS fighter. Isaac lost by decision, 2 rounds to 1.


Fight 2 - TERRION WARE
Terrion rocked his opponent with a solid jab right away, which forced his opponent to head right for the clinch. After training for only 4 months total in jiu-jitsu, Terrion's natural athleticism was evident when he showed tremendous versatility in the clinch and on the ground with a far more experienced wrestler and jiu-jitsu player. Several reversals and chokes from Terrion and his opponent made this a well-matched fight as well. Again it was obvious that Terrion's opponent did not want to stand and fight with the AMMS fighter, as he kept pressing for the takedown. Finally, in the 3rd round, Terrion's opponent was able to take him down and lock him into a guillotine choke, and Terrion was forced to tap out with less than a minute left in the fight. Nonetheless, what a great display of heart and strength against a more experienced MMA fighter!

Fight 3 - HOWARD LaCROIX
With a wrestling and boxing background, Howard gave his opponent a run for his money. Howard rocked his opponent right away with a large right cross and solid leg kick, prompting his opponent to shoot for the double-leg takedown. The match persisted to be a presentation of strength and wrestling, with both fighters looking for the takedown and ground n' pound. Howard won the first round, but lost the second two, and so lost by decision 2 rounds to 1.

As first time fighters, Isaac, Terrion, and Howard showed amazing heart, versatility, strength, and conditioning. None of them gassed out and none of them gave up. They made their team and their coaches proud, and showed the other teams that even our first-time fighters can put up one hell of a fight!
